The Southern Jewish Historical Society held its annual conference in Nashville this year.  The group visited the Franklin Library on October 29th to view a display on Julius Rosenwald materials and the Rosenwald Rural Negro Schools Program. Julius Rosenwald, who was Jewish, was a philanthropist and president of Sears, Roebuck & Company.  The Rosenwald program erected more than 5,300 schools and auxiliary buildings in several southern states between 1912 and 1932. Rosenwald had a good working relationship with Charles Spurgeon Johnson, the first African American president of Fisk University. The library staff also presented on Fisk’s popular and extensive Rosenwald collections. The group plans to visit the only local Rosenwald school still standing while in Nashville.
