Fisk University Rocket Team Awarded a $4,000 Grant by Piedmont Natural Gas

Fisk’s Rocket Team was awarded a $4,000 Grant by Piedmont Natural Gas to help boost STEM in Nashville-Area Public Schools.

The support from Piedmont Natural Gas will purchase laboratory data acquisition equipment and physics demonstration equipment to help expand the educational experience of Fisk students through discovery.

Fisk University students will gain a deeper knowledge of how to apply scientific principles, and will then teach those same principles to Nashville-area middle and high-school students. Piedmont’s grant will also aid the Rocket Team’s efforts to encourage more participation in middle and high school science clubs.  Research suggests that mentoring initiatives have a strong impact on the achievement of middle school students by raising the likelihood that they will go to college.  And once there, a higher probability exists, Fisk hopes, that STEM will become a career choice.
